The West Valley Fault (WVF) is a major geological fault line in the Philippines and is part of the larger Valley Fault System (VFS), which also includes the East Valley Fault. Stretching
for about 100 kilometers, the WVF runs through several highly populated areas in Metro Manila and nearby provinces, including Quezon City, Marikina, Pasig, Makati, Taguig, Muntinlupa, Laguna, Cavite, Bulacan, and Rizal.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has identified the WVF as an active fault that is capable of generating a magnitude 7.2 earthquake (an event often referred to as "The Big One"). Such an earthquake could cause severe destruction in Metro Manila and surrounding areas due to the dense population and infrastructure built along the fault.
Because of this risk, PHIVOLCS constantly monitors the WVF and urges residents and local governments to prepare through proper land-use planning, earthquake drills,
retrofitting of buildings, and disaster readiness measures.
